When it rains...

it some times pours! here's what happened to me (V) on my way back to work after lunch on tuesday.

absolutely scary. fyi I wasnt speeding. I was driving at about 20mph but the road was really wet since it was raining all morning. I'm fine, was just pretty shaken up. we got the car pulled out and i was able to drive it later. the irony of it all on Monday we had just decided that we're ready to get a new car!

Ugly Betty...

I admit that I dont watch the show and am well aware of what a major hit it is. BUT, it comes on at the same time as Survivor:) I have seen a little bit of it though and it's hilarious.

Anyways, on Tuesday I walked into my friend Yvette's office and guess who was there!!! It was Ugly Betty! In all that excitement I forgot to get an autograph:)

FYI this is Brandon, Yvette's son. This has got to be THE best costume I've seen! Here's what he looks like on most normal days!

Hier Kom die Bokke!

South Africa takes on England in Paris this Saturday for the World Cup Rugby final. The Boks have played a great tournament and pretty much bulldozed everyone in their path on the way to the finals. Last time SA won the World Cup was in 1995 in South Africa - what an awesome home victory, esp since it was our first time hosting the World Cup! I hope the Boks win. Its a good set up for Soccer World Cup coming to SA in 2010.

(btw - the title is afrikaans and translates to here come the bucks)

Right off the streets of Bombay!!!

We went to a wedding on Saturday and Javan got to wear his kurta. I think he looks so adorable in it:) Mum and Dad brought it for him for Christmas, he got to wear it for Easter and for J's graduation and I'm so glad it still fits and he can wear it several more times. Makes me happy since he's only worn some of his dressier of stuff just once or twice before he outgrew it.

We do have some pics from the wedding - once they are uploaded I'll be sure to share it. I might even post a clip of Javan dancing at the reception:)

Race for the Cure

I ran my first 5km race after a VERY long time! It's probably been about 6 or 7yrs. Not that I quit running, I just stopped training competitively and well just got lazy. So naturally my finishing time was awful - I know I'll never run a +/- 20min 5km ever again and thats ok. My goal was just to finish the race and run it entirely (no walking) and I did just that so I'm very happy. It takes a while to get back into the running mode and I am slowly getting.

I know I wasnt ready for the race but I wanted to run. This past Sunday a few thousand runners and walkers gathered in Chattanooga to run/walk the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Race for the Cure race. It was touching to see the many survivors running. Some runners ran in memory or celebration of others. You could read the names since they were written on pink tags and pinned on the backs of runners.

there's no pictures from the race cos apparently they would have turned out blury (jermaine's words - i dont get it but whatever). Here's my training partner and I before the race ... he decided to sit this one out and watch instead!

Cake Decorating 101

I got very fun birthday gift from Norma - the Wilton Cake Decorating Course 1 class. Had no clue what I was getting myself into but I was excited and definitely had fun with it. here's a photo diary of what I learnt:
week 1
making my first batch of buttercream icing

colouring the icing

getting it smooth on the cake

and now the final product - the cake from my first class. I'm not good with the writing at all

this is what it was supposed to look like - i messed up the number in the middle and tried to fix it but it just wasnt working out so the end result was a nice smudgy mess!

i practiced the techniques i learnt in class later in the week and did this umbrella free-hand

and then i got a little more adventurous and tried out a soccer ball

Week 3 - clowns and shells
clown cake i did in class - a very weak attempt!

i practiced later in the week and did much better!

and just messing around with some cupcakes

the hardest thing to learn was the rose so each week we did a different step and last night we put it all together. i actually enjoyed making the roses once i got the hang of it. as you can see i still have lots to improve on the borders. the shell border is not my friend:) we also learned leaves and sweet peas so i incorporated all of those in the cake.

and when I got home from class i did this cake - my fave flower is the drop flower.

i'll definitely be decorating cakes every once in a while and i'm even considering doing course 2 next year. I learnt a lot and know for a fact that I WILL NOT be going into the cake decorating business. I'll leave that to the pros. Now I know why cakes can cost so much. Can we say labour intensive?
